About HEARTSPRING ORPHANAGE

Heartspring is a Christian orphanage located in Livingstone, Zambia and is presently the home for 22 orphan boys and 31 girls. It is overseen by a Board of Directors composed of 8 Christian men and women from Livingstone.  Jacob Sianungu is the Chairman of the Board.  Jacob also serves on the Board of Directors for the Zambian government’s board for “Zambian Orphans and Vulnerable Children”. In the USA,there are 8 dedicated Christians who serve to raise funding as members of "Heartspring Africa Fpoundation". (see below)
The current need is to find sponsors for each girl! For just $150/month, you can provide food, medical, schooling, a dorm matron, a security guard, and any other necessities for an orphan girl.

QUESTIONS to J.L. Brazell ABOUT HEARTSPRING:
1. "When was Heartspring Africa Foundation formed and how is it organized?"
While Heartspring Orphanage for boys has existed in Africa since 2002, the Girl's orphanage dream began in 2005. Donations from individuals were given to build the buildings for the girls and were received by the Montgomery Blvd. Church of Christ and forwarded to Zambia exclusively for that purpose. Eastlake Church in Columbia, SC also sent money directly to Zambia as well. In 2010 the first cottage was completed and the first 18 girls were brought in. It was decided that it would be best to set up Heartspring Africa Foundation as a separate entity. A group of 8 faithful Christians passionate about orphans were identified to form a Board of Trustees. For donors to receive tax deductions for their contributions, it was necessary to obtain a 501c3 designation. So a lawyer was hired and the application was submitted. The designation from IRS was obtained in 2011 (effective for all donations made to Heartspring for the entire year). A CPA has been secured as well and will do a careful independent audit each year to assure that all donations are used appropriately. The Heartspring Africa Board of Trustees will meet face to face as often as necessary to effectively manage the Foundation. Between Meetings each is in communication by email. Each Trustee is a faithful donor of money, time, and prayer. Each Trustee plans to visit the orphanage over the next few years. Three Trustees visited the orphanage in Zambia  in November 2011. Others plan to visit and inspect it next year.

2. "What happens to Heartspring if you are killed or incapacitated?"  Years ago I would have worried about that question. But I have come to realize that God's work does not depend upon any one man's life or work. God simply allows us to serve on His team for a while. It is our privilege but He will rise up others when He sees fit! Likely whomever He chooses to fill the role will likely do a better job than the one who served before. One reason for forming the Heartspring Board of Trustees was to make any transition of leadership one that would be as smooth as possible so that the children would not be harmed. Knowing the passion and talents of the Board, I am confident that they and ones whom they would encourage to come on board would be more than able. Remember "THIS IS GOD'S WORK" - not mine. He is in charge not me nor you.

3. "What happens if Jacob is killed or incapacitated?" This was one of the questions that was discussed at length during our visit to Zambia in November. Jacob too formed a Board of Trustees in Zambia. He has chosen 8 dedicated, capable Christians to serve on the Zambian Board. Each actively participates. During the Board Meeting there they assured me that they would miss Jacob's leadership and presence but they are working to assure continuity for the inevitable. His shoes will be very difficult to fill but they too recognize this is God's work and they must step up to do whatever He chooses for them. We pray the Lord will keep Jacob alive and well for many years but there are other faithful Christian leaders in Zambia whom God may use when His time is right.

4. "You seek sponsors for each girl. I cannot afford to sponsor a girl @ $150/month but how can I help"? First - Pray for them. They need prayers for their health, loneliness, spiritual guidance, and comfort. Second - give whatever you can financially. There are always emergencies that drain the finances. Jacob did his best to plan things out financially but he did not know inflation would erode the purchasing power of the Kwacha. He did not foresee how much it would cost to take girls in from unhealthy circumstances and get them well. He did not realize how many others would catch their illnesses and need treatment. He did not realize how many girls would exceed expectations in the campus schoolroom and need to go off campus to study in public school. (Off campus, each child must pay tuition, buy their own books and uniforms, etc. Free education does not exist in Zambia). Sponsors sometimes cannot fulfil their sponsorship because of their own unforeseen circumstances. We need funds to fill the gap until a new sponsor can be found. Heartspring needs various emergency funds, education funds, and medical funds.

5. "How much of my money will go towards "Overhead expenses or fund raising"?" Neither Jacob nor any board member (USA or Zambia) receives any compensation from Heartspring. Jacob is supported as a preacher so he does not need compensation. The Lord has blessed us abundantly so Lorene and I are happy to do this as our ministry.  The only overhead expenses are minimal and are for mailings, bank fees, annual C.P.A.fees, Legal advice, and rarely some minimal travel expense reimbursement. Your dollars go directly to the care and feeding of the girls.
